Sinners and Saints

Discussion

While watching that hoary old show "Touched by an Angel" with my grandmother, I thought suddenly about how amazing a conceit this was -- that there were angels walking amongst us as if men. As far as I know, there's nothing in the Bible to support such an assertion, but that never stops people from believing in such things. The first three lines and the general tune started running through my mind at that time.

I was driving fifty miles to work, then another fifty miles back, between Castor LA and Shreveport LA. Around that time a popular Little League coach was accused of molesting some of the boys he coached. The paper convicted him in print long before he appeared in court. But one quote stuck with me. One of his former team members, long grown up, was quoted as saying in anguish something along the lines of "I don't understand. He was like a father to me after my parents divorced. He helped me get through the bad times. How could he do something like this?".

The song wrote itself during my next trip home, as I sang it at the top of my lungs to hear myself over the rattling of my old pickup truck.

Sinners and Saints

Sinners and saints and angels above
looking down on this old world
Sinner or saint or angel of love
and I don't know which one you were

well when I was young and cryin' in pain
you gave me love and lifted me to my feet
you told me you loved me
you showed me you cared
you taught me that caring
could cure my dispair
you taught me about courage
and how it was inside
you helped me grow up
and become a man

Sinner or saint or angel of love
which one were you when you gave me that hug
you told me you loved me
you showed me you cared
Sinner or saint or angel... of love...

well long years have passed
and somehow we strayed
well I saw a picture in the paper today
hands cuffed behind you
your face turned away

You were the father that I never had
How could you do what you did that's so bad
I remember your arms as they held me so close
I remember your love when I needed it most

Sinners and saints and angels above
looking down on this old world
Sinner or saint or angel of love
which one were you when you told me you loved me
