Discussion:
While in Houston, I met a scion of the local Republican establishment and went to one of his Republican "prayer meetings" in his large house, where he got together with similarly wealthy friends and held long tirades about how taxes were immoral and how if people could not afford tuition to send children to school they shouldn't have children. It appears the big deal was that he was seeing close to half of his six-figure salary disappear into taxes, and was going to have to settle for a new Saab instead of a new Mercedes. Sob.This was inbetween tirades complaining that he couldn't find qualified people to work for him, of course. He saw no connection between the two events (the Republican anti-education-tax emphasis, and the lack of educated people in Houston).
