Always ForgivenDiscussion:This is the one and only song that I made up on the spot without working eons on it. Listening to my first take (the first time I ever played or sang it, before a single word was written to paper), it is quite close to the final version, with only a few words re-arranged or changed.Note that today (August 5, 2000) is the first time I've played this song since October of 1997. On the last take I made, the one that's online, I fumbled a chord change in the 2nd verse and fumbled a cue on the 3rd verse. I was tired of practicing the blasted thing (I spent about an hour playing it over and over) and just said "Screw it, I'm not trying to make money selling music anyhow." Where the song came from: I taught one year in a BIC (Behavior Intervention Center), where the "bad" kids were sent. These kids are great at blaming others for their bad behavior, and they're always the victims of vast conspiracies, "I didn't do nuttin, they were just out to get me at my last school" being the usual story. (See "The Offspring"'s song "Walla Walla" for a perfect example of what happens once this kid grows up, I remember feeling a strong sense of deja-vu first time I heard it, three years after writing "Forgiven"). After one incident, I remember one of the other teachers grumbling that "some of these kids get too much forgiving, and too little disciplining." Meaning, that the reason they seemed to have a problem with the idea of behavior and consequence was that at home, they got the same consequence (hugs, rewards, etc.) no matter what their behavior. The song came from my recollection of that grumbling, and my recollection of the kids I met both there and at the juvenile detention facility that I volunteered at.
