At one time, I taught in an inner city school in Houston. I would see the children come into first grade with eyes bright and wide, and dreams as big as the U.S. of A. But something happened as they grew older. The light slowly died, the dreams slowly faded, as it sunk in, year after year, that this was it. This... hell... that they lived in was all they would ever have, was all they would ever be.

Some broke in despair. Others went into denial. And others... well, they went more than a little bit crazy. I wrote the song "Dead Children" for them, the children for whom the American Dream is just a lie that eats them up inside. Too bad nobody ever listens.
