How can people drink Folger's Coffee?

One of the downsides of working for a growing software company is a constant space crunch. In desperation, my employer rented out some space from a neighboring software company and moved part of the development group over there. The one and only problem: We have to share a kitchen and a coffee maker, and these people are enamored of Folger's Coffee.

Now, first of all, don't think of me as a coffee snob. I'm not. I don't roast and grind my own beans, and I don't use fancy French or Italian equipment to brew my coffee. I am from Louisiana, so I use the state coffee of Louisiana (by act of legislature!), Community Coffee dark roast, as can be purchased via mail order from Cajun Grocer for around $5 per pound. This is a good-quality french roast, it is relatively fresh (they do not sell huge cans of the stuff, it's all vacuum-packed 1 pound "bricks"), it has a nice smooth taste. Actually, the taste depends upon the coffee maker. The coffee maker that I find gives me the best taste is a West Bend QuikDrip. I use plain old generic filters from Albertson's, the expensive filters don't give any better taste and the no-toss filters allow too many of the bitter oils through. I use 1/4th cup of coffee grounds in the filter to make 4 cups of coffee. This seems rather wasteful, but I don't get the correct flavor if I don't have the correct depth of coffee grounds. I am currently experimenting with one of those little 4-cup coffee makers, but have not yet arrived at the correct depth to give me the right flavor, so I continue using the big 10 cup beasty for my morning brew.

Okay, so I'm a LITTLE bit of a coffee snob. But I will put up with any good grind of coffee, and did so in the last office. But this Folgers stuff... man, this is NASTY! Tastes like battery acid. It's bitter, tastes stale like it's been opened for years... I thought it was just the fact that I was on the dregs of a can, so I opened another can. And sniffed. UGH! It even SMELLS stale, freshly opened! (And the taste is no more improved, BTW).

So I have a question to ask: How in the world can anybody drink this nasty stuff? Anybody have a clue?

In the meantime, I'm taking the little 4 cup coffee maker to the office so that I can get a decent noon brew. Hopefully I'll manage to figure out the correct depth of coffee grounds to get the flavor I want. But even without the correct depth, a good quality coffee tastes a ton better than that nasty Folger's stuff...
